Stabilisation of Lateritic Soil for Road Construction Using Banana Leaf Ash

چکیده

In view of the need to stabilise poor lateritic soil for road construction, this study investigated effects banana leaf ash (content retained on British Standard sieve No. 40) strength characteristics selected soils. This is with a ascertaining possibility using referenced (BLA) content soils, construction purpose. To achieve aim study, two samples were collected from identified borrow pits (one sample each pit – referred as Sample A and B respectively) in Ile-Ife, southwestern Nigeria. Using standard procedure, preliminary geotechnical tests conducted their natural states. BLA was then prepared introduced soils at varying proportions 2 %, 4 % 6 by weight dry soil. The Atterberg limits California bearing ratio (CBR) subsequently determined treated For results showed that: plasticity index values 22.91 26.60 respectively; specific gravity 2.71 2.75 optimum moisture (OMC) maximum density (MDD) 26.50 1.325 Mg/m3 respectively, while 19.80 1.643 CBR 6.85 11.36 respectively. With addition BLA: generally reduced lowest (4.89 6.24 content; steadily increased until (10.23 22.73 obtained content. concluded could be used improve properties purpose; particle size does not diminish quality soil-stabilising agent.

Influence of Polypropylene Fibers on Engineering Behavior of Soil−Fly Ash Mixtures for Road Construction

Fly ash is a waste produced mostly from the burning of coal in thermal power stations, which contributes to environmental pollution. Also, a number of studies have been conducted to investigate the influence of randomly oriented fibers on the engineering behavior of coarse grained and fine grained soils. The influence of randomly oriented polypropylene fibers on the engineering behavior of soil...

Equilibrium and Thermodynamics Studies for Decolorization of Reactive Black 5 by Adsorption onto Acid Modified Banana Leaf Ash

Abstract Background: At present study, acid modified banana leaf ash was used as an adsorbent for the successful removal of Reactive Black 5 (RB5) dye from aqueous environments. Materials and methods: The effect of various operating parameters such as pH of solution, dye concentration, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and the temperature was investigated. Results: Maximum adsorption capacity of ...

Permeability of Lateritic Soil Treated with Lime and Rice Husk Ash

A-7-6 lateritic soil was treated at British Standard Light (BSL) compaction energy with up to 8% lime content (by dry weight of the soil) at 2% variations and each was admixed with up to 8% rice husk ash (RHA) at 2% variations. Effects of the ash on the soil-lime mixtures were investigated with respect to unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and coefficient of permeability. The UCS of the spec...

Toxicity of leachate from bottom ash in a road construction.

A test road constructed with municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash was monitored over a period of 36 months. Using chemical and toxicological characterisation, the environmental impact of leachates from bottom ash was evaluated and compared with leachates from gravel used as reference. Initial leaching of Cl, Cu, K, Na, NH4-N and TOC from bottom ash was of major concern. However,...

Assessment of Effect of Road or Road Construction on Soil Physical and Chemical Properties in Northern Forests of Iran

Forests are an important economic source for human and have key role in nutrient cycle, hydrology and ecosystem performance, any interference in this vital ecosystem causes to damage to forests. Mechanical logging and road construction in forest areas have led to much soil compaction. Soil physical and chemical properties were studied in parts of road and non-road in the Darabkola forest of Ira...
